Rhaetian

The Rhaetian is the latest age of the Triassic Period. A quarry near Winterswijk (Netherlands), most famous for its Anisian layer and fossils, contains at the very top a thin dark layer originating from the Rhaetian. Although this layer is not accessible directly, the factory dropped a number of truckloads of this layer at the bottom of the quarry.

The layer is very crumbled and has an abundant amount of pyrite. In the rocks containing pyrite there are also very small fossils as shown above and below. Hardly visible with the naked eye so you need a microscope to really see them well. All pictures here are made with a digital microscope.
